The faction of Al Qaida reponsible for the Madrid bombings has endorsed George W. Bush:

"The statement said it supported President Bush in his reelection campaign, and would prefer him to win in November rather than the Democratic candidate John Kerry, as it was not possible to find a leader 'more foolish than you (Bush), who deals with matters by force rather than with wisdom.'"

"In comments addressed to Bush, the group said:"

"'Kerry will kill our nation while it sleeps because he and the Democrats have the cunning to embellish blasphemy and present it to the Arab and Muslim nation as civilization.'"

"'Because of this we desire you (Bush) to be elected.'"

Of course, it goes without saying that Al Qaida has no more of an idea about how to fight terrorism than we do. But that same logic should apply to the bombings in Spain. Al Qaida wanted Aznar gone, but that doesn't mean it wasn't the right thing to do.

In the Spanish case this argument is likely irrelevant anyway. Many voters were more swayed by the government's cover up of Al Qaida's responsibility than by the bombing itself.

The Spanish people opposed the War in Iraq long before the bombing. They planned to re-elect Aznar inspite of his support for invasion, not because of it. The bombing simply put the issue back front-and-centre. The Spanish could no longer elect a Prime Minister who -- they believed -- had the wrong strategy for fighting terrorism.

The well documented mentality of western Europe is appeasement. Let Hitler keep going, he'll leave us be.

A very popular opinion among rightwing Americans but quite a bit one-sided to put it mildly. Stopping a dictator in a powerful nation nextdoor is a whole different matter than removing one from a weakened country far, far away. European leaders appeased him because a different stance would have resulted in war. Not a war in which you send soldiers overseas to fight in another country, but a war in which foreign soldiers invade your country and kill your civilians. Americans have a well documented lack of understanding of how it is to NOT be militarily superior. That being said, I didn't see America fight Hitler all that actively until Japan dragged them into it kicking & screaming.

This doesn't really matter. If the REAL terrorists did endorse Bush, it is a big deal. I have never heard of this anywhere else, it would be all over the media if the real terrorists actually did.

Abu Hafs al-Masri, has claimed credit for the bombing, declared that Spain would no longer be targeted if it follows through with its pledge to pull its troops out of Iraq and has recently claimed that it thinks that Kerry would be a more cunning adversary than Bush. The problem is there are some serious questions about the group’s creditability. They claimed to be behind the Madrid bombings, but there is no evidence that they were at all connected and they claimed to be behind the London and North American blackouts and there is no evidence of sabotage either of these cases let alone evidence they the group did anything.
