Why I Support Belinda Stronach for Conservative Leader
Some may quible. They'll say that one shouldn't answer that one is "not a military expert" when asked about contributing Canadians soldiers to the invasion of Iraq -- at least not if one is a candidate for Prime Minister.
But, nevertheless, I hereby throw my unconditional support behind Belinda Stronach for leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.
I have reasons, three:
Non-Threatening: Belinda probably won't engender enough fear amongst the masses to cost the NDP many votes. Unlike Stockwell Day, she isn't scary enough to send left-leaning Liberals hiding behind Paul Martin's skirt. (Hopefully this will help keep Liberal vote totals down in Ontario and the Atlantic.)
Anti-Populist: As we all know, one reason that so many Western ridings flipped from NDP to Reform/Alliance is that voters were trading one populist movement for another. But Stronach will combine the worst of both the Alliance and the PCs: a radically conservative membership and an eastern elitest leadership. (Obviously, this helps the NDP in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia.)
Slick Belinda: Lets face it, the Conservatives -- much less Belinda Stronach -- haven't got a chance. But I think Paul Martin's people are so obsessed with image politics ("Paul Martin as Lord and Saviour!") that a candidate like Belinda Stronach may well scare them.
If Martin moves right to fend off the Tories, the NDP will gain an open left flank. Go Belinda!
